THE PROBLEM: The contractor for a major cellular communications company discovered soft, unsuitable soils at a proposed location for a new 200 foot tall tower in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

In order to stay on schedule, the contractor needed to erect the new tower with minimal delay and without a major redesign. The contractor contacted Atlas Piers of Atlanta, Inc. for help. The design engineer and Atlas Systems, Inc. worked together to match a helical foundation pier system to the requirements. 1,800 lineal feet of pier were installed in 3 days! The time from inquiry to finished installation was only 10 days!

Above is a view of the nine piers after installation, notice the batter to the outside on the perimeter piers.

Once the soil information was supplied, the engineers determined that a minimum of 9 anchors would be required in each footing. The central pier was driven vertically while the remaining piers were spaced 450 apart and driven with an outward batter of 40 to minimize loss of strength due to influence from adjacent piers on the bearing soil.

	The photographs show the installation procedure for the ATLAS-Helical FOUNDATION PIERS. A 12,000 ft-lb hydraulic gear motor was used for quick installation.
